So I bought a Pake
« on: July 02, 2008, 04:23:49 PM »

So I have been wanting a fixed gear bike for quite some time and decided to bite the bullet and build one up.  I have no desire to make a hipster cool colored up design student show piece trick bike.  I do however want a durable fun ride that I will enjoy for a long time.  I was going to order a Mercier Kilo TT but the fucking thing doesn't even ship until 7/10/08 so this entire time I have been researching and decided to go another way.

I decided to go with the Pake track frame.  I went with this frame for a few reasons.  First off and most importantly, it fits me well.  I test rode a built one multiple times and it feels great.  Second, I don't need a NJS/Keirin frame and they are expensive as shit any way.  I want something durable that I will not mind if it gets banged up.  Why would i want to buy a beautiful NJS frame and destroy it.  The general concensus is that the Pake is a slight bit on the heavy side (I didn't think so on my rides) but built like a tank.   Finally, it is pretty cheap compared to other frames out there.

So I bought a 57 cm frame in the 2008 Bassboat green limited color.  I wanted a green bike and was planning on getting something and having it powder coated but this just saves me the trouble.  The green is a really nice forest green with a lot of gold flake in it.  Think fish.

I am hunting for parts now as we speak but am thinking of splurging on a 165 Sugino crankset and BB, Chris King headset, and a comfy seat.  The rest for now will be as cheap as I can get them.  Looking for some dirt cheap wheels, stem, seat post, and bars.  Let me know if you have anything that may help out.

I will throw up some photos when I get a chance of the frame, but for now I am happy just taking my time researching, buying, then building.  It gives me something to do away from a tv but damn I wish I was up and riding already.

i wouldn't go any other way but sugino for the crankset. the RD's i've been riding for a year have been pretty great for the price. i got em on sale but the regularly go for like 80 or 90 bucks for the set and thats with a 48t ring. otherwise look towards maybe the iro cranks (which may just be rebranded RD's).

i'm gonna plug my local shop here since steve is great dude and always helps me out when i need something. he builds TONS of wheels and can pretty much get anything you want and ships everywhere.

I have been looking at the RD setup. I want this.  But fuckin hell that's alot.  I haven't found it anywhere else online though.

Not sure what to get for much else.  I have a lead on a set of IRO wheels for $75 local and I am just waiting to hear back.  I would like to keep most of the components grey with a little black.  I think it would look really nice.

Thanks for the link.  I found their webstore to.  thumbsup

yeah the zen is a nice set but for a few bills more you could just get sugino 75's without the stupid chainring.

Yeah.  I am on somewhat of a budget so I am just thinking a plain silver Sugino RD setup.

Think I  may have found a set of IRO's base line wheels for $75.  Woot.

Got the wheels.  They look really good.  All true and not to scratched up.  No bends or dings.  $200 wheels for $75.  Sweet.

Not sure how much I like the bars, but here is how it sits right now.  The bars remind me of fallopian tubes.  I dunno, it's the first thing that comes to mind.  Might have to change them out asap.

Here you can kind of see the flake in the paint. Looks great in the sun.

Can't wait until everything else gets here.  :tup2:

love the color, but i am partial to green. the bars are ok, you can't really get"stylish" with risers.

Not looking to get stylish, just was thinking a plain black 25.4 all the way across might look a little cleaner.

And yeah, green is my favorite color so I am biased towards anything that color.

oh you don't like them cuz they're fatter in the middle? it's hard to find a set in 25.4 all the way across cuz no threadless stems come in that clamp diameter if i remember correctly. they gotta fatten em up in the middle to match the stem then the ends are skinny for grips. i'd wait til you ride them to decide though, comfort is more important than looks.

Yeah, you are probably right. I should ride it first and complain later.   monk   At the local shop where I bought it they had a threadless setup in 25.4.  Looked great and rode well to. It was on the bike I test rode several times to help me decide to go with the Pake.

The green is a limited color for 2008.  I have no idea how many there are but I am glad to have gotten one.  I just hope the first person I see riding one when I am on mine is not gay like an owner of a silver mkiv gti.

Went and bought a BB tool and put the final pieces together yesterday.

OMG this thing is fun.  I still need to adjust it and fine tune it for the most comfort, but it is a blast to ride. Fast to.

I want to go out and ride again later today.  Rode yesterday afternoon, and this morning.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance.
