Need help/ideas, snapped body bolt on A-arm assembly...
« on: May 07, 2008, 01:19:13 PM »

Wee brother broke this on the Rally car  monk.  Essentially, you have the A-arm, like above, you've got your two bushings...  The rear bushing or one on the right hand side of the above image has a bracket that fits over it and over two studs that emanate from the bottom of the car that you tighten nuts onto.  Well, one of those studs snapped off...  I've never had this happen before.  I had two idea...

1.  Weld on another best as I can.
2.  Grind it off, drill a hole through where it came from, put a bolt/washer in from above floor pan, put a washer below floor pan, place bracket below that washer then bolt.

...ideas?

And its not an actual threaded hole with a stud in it, as I recall.

Option 1 seems kinda sketchy, option 2 sounds solid!

holy shit.

I am always super careful with putting nuts on those things for fear of crossthreading them.. I have NO IDEA what to do with a snapped off one.

let me know what you end up doing.

did it loosen up? I guess you cant really tell, huh?

id build a super beffy plae w/ grade 8 bolts that could be welded into palce repalcing the studs on both sides. hell maybe even make it so there are 4 bolts holding that rear mount into place. i was debtiang doing this right off the bat on the rally rabbit iv been working on. but that car is out on the road being beaten silly as i speak!.....

on my caddy, im installing a whole mk2 subframe to get away form the kind of weak/lamo mk1 contorlarms and frame horns.

Willdo, no idea if it loosened up, was my brother at the controls while I was at work.  I asked him exactly what happened and he said he thinks he was tightening it when he should have been loosening.  monk - I guess I'm gunna see what type of metal is present, what type of bolstering vw did in that area and I do have a donor car I can cut from, we'll see!

I'll post pix of the carnage.
