oil cooler setups? 16v
« on: May 05, 2008, 01:03:52 PM »

its been years since ive owned a 16v..but on my last one was my scirocco i had a sweet mocal setup that i got dirt cheap from this crack head..

i was wondering if anyone on here is running an oil cooler setup and where ya got it from

cause im looking at the ones on eurosport for 150bucks..
http://www.eurosportacc.com/oilcooler.htm
and they look almost like the same ones on the summitracing website for 89bucks

Whatever you get, make sure it's thermostatic.  A non-thermostatic sandwich adapter will make your oil take forever and a day to come up to temp.  Eurosport's description leads me to believe the standard 4 cyl kit doesn't come with the thermostatic adapter.

Poke around racer's part wholesale.  You can piece together a kit for right around $250. Don't use rubber line.  At the bare minimum run Aeroquip or Russell pushlock.  You'll thank yourself later when the contents of your sump aren't all over the road.

Mocal makes nice thermostatic plates for VR, I am sure I saw an option for 1.8's... I got a used volvo oil cooler core that jesse is going to weld -AN fittings on, then I am having the shop down the road make some nice SS braided lines.  Ive been told you can get NPT fittings on just once over the brittish standard on the volvo core, If you dont care about disconnecting the lines from the cooler I'd use JBWeld and regular NPT fittings and be cheap and dirty..

I think I remember reading that you can use the oil cooler plate off a volvo on a 1.8 with no problems, do some research and head to a junk yard.. might get lucky and find everything you need for next to nothing.

I run a Mocal setup on my race car.  Thermostatic is the only way to go.  it'll heat up to ~85 deg C FAST, then stay there like the gauge is broken.  Even after a run at the hillclimb it'll be touching 95 deg.  Much better than running 120-140 regularly.

Lets see if I can remember the shopping list
volvo 740T thermo plate +  the oil filter stem & corresponding nut (same size, possibly different length, otherwise a nice extra to have laying around)
2x BSP to AN adapters (IIRC volvo plates are British thread, maybe 1/2"?)
2x AN -> Pushlock 90 deg (use whatever angle to route the hose coming off of the plate where you want it to go)
aeroquip push lock hose
2x AN -> Pushlock straight (or whatever angle to mount the cooler)
2x AN to NPT (for summit cooler)

I forget what size cooler I had (see above pic), but the setup cooled very nicely.  You could pretty much drain the cooling system and the oil cooler would get you home without overheating.  FYI that radiator was the Non AC "Short" radiator.... hence the extra room to mount the cooler on the end.

Don't know the compatibility between 1.8t's and 16v's, but would guess that they could interchange parts since they use the same oil filters and the 1.8t is basically a morphed 16v.

but
it looks like you could fit an s4/v6 oil cooler on a 16v

http://www.modifieda4.com/web/tech/oil-cooler.html

never seen or heard of anyone trying it.... but you could be the 1st.... maybe luck out and find an early v6 audi at the pull 'n part and get it for $5.  I'm not sure what came with the bigger cooler though

i run a all OEM volvo set up on my TT, i took the volvo oil cooler and cut off the line fittings for it as ther esoem goofy hard to get type of thread......... and i tig welded on new i think dash-10 AN fittings to it, then for lines i used socetless hose's and fittings. cost me bout 90buks for eveythign!.... works like a champ. and now i can get parts at any race shop in the world if i have probelms down the road. oh and a fram oil filter seal fits teh volvo oil cooers perfact!.... so no need to track down odd seals and shit!

p.s. i got all the volvo parts a a local pull-n-save junk yard for bout 20buks and 3 bloody nuckles.

I paid $50 for it and promptly placed it on the shelf, never to be installed.

I'm not that far from you if you want to grab it.
