so ive had this on my mind for a while now...having two sciroccos with not a lot of time to work on them or space to keep them out of the weather.

the dilemna:
do i sell my 88 scirocco that i build pretty much from the ground up, motor and everything, to build my 81S rocco? i have pretty much put my heart and soul in the 88 and all it really needs to make me happy is to have paint. i love this car.

on the other hand if i sold it i could build my 81S to be extremely badass. right now it is just a shell but i have TONS of parts that i could throw at it immediately.

i really do wanna keep both but im just not sure it is wise. if i sell one it will definitely be the 88.

no matter what both cars are still projects. when is a car ever really done? id just be happy with it for a while if it had paint. it comes down to it being harder for me to crawl around on the floor to work on anything. i still enjoy doing it but im not the limber person i once was.

i like what i have but sometimes it comes down to should I move on. it will break my heart to see the 88 go if i do end up selling.

I'm gunna go gay here for a second and talk about love factor.  When you just look at statements that declare love for a vehicle in your first post one car got all the love - the other didn't get any.  It SOUNDS to me like you'd be fucking miserable if you sold your 88 even if the older car ended up being badass, you'd still miss it.

It also sounds to me like from your tone etc that you are over having extreme projects anymore and the older rocco is that.

I have had quite a bit of experience of selling cars that I really loved and I've regretted it - EVERY TIME.  I am sure I tire people around me with stories like "man, if I only had that car...".

I couldnt imagine you not owning the 88.

if that makes any sense..

you will never get what you want out of that car.. you're better off painting it and keeping it as a fun weekend car that doesnt require constant attention.. even if you only insure it over the summer, which is what I'm looking into doing.

if you want to fix the mk1, that'd be cool too.. but it'll be a long time before you get that into the "fun to drive and I dont have to fuck with it" catagory.

Yup, kinda how we all know you Jon. Getting rid of it will burn like hell because deep down, you'll never get another one like it even if it would be the same.

no matter what im building the 81 i just figured selling the 88 would make it go a little faster. you all are making good points.

I don't know you well enough to be biased by history and/or what car you're "identified" with. I do know I'm in the same position with my 79, 82, 84 and 85 roccos and a 90 G60 corrado to boot.

Here's my take on deciding between keeping a MK1 vice a MK1 AND a MK2:

Never, ever, ever part with a Scirocco. There's not as many of them left as you'd think. When you're driving one, they're all over the place, but try looking for one on craigslist or ebay where the owner isn't totally out of his mind on what he thinks is a reasonable price. I had a guy try to sell me a non-running mk1 with a 10 degree twist down the lateral axis of the chassis. He wanted 1200 and he actually asked me to leave when I told him I'd be hesitant at 300 (interior was gutted and it wouldn't turn over).

You'll always want that 88 back and it's taking every ounce of my self-control not to try to convince you to sell it to me because I've always wanted one of the 16v roccos.

There it is. I don't even know you, but keep that car. You'll only kick yourself later.
