building a 3" stainless exhaust system
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:06:25 AM »

so, my TT currently has a 3" piece of 304 stainlessfrom the cast down pipe to about 1.5' past the bumper.

probelms.

no mufflers, no cat, and its about 82% a straight shot form teh motor out the back of the car no bend over 5deg! thing is loud as fuck, its monster and hangs dowon a bit lower than it should, mouting it is a bitch due to it size and having allwheeldrive in teh way.

parts needed.

3" straight thru muffler

3" ultra high flow cat

3" race pipe

3" monster sturaght thru resinator

a few (not sure how many yet) cesna/v-band flange's & clamps

2-o2 sensor bungs

all hav eto be 100% stainless steel as id like to keep this thing looking good, lasting for ever and able to take monster amounts of heat w/ out blowing out, or rusting all to shit.

if anyone has a sugeston on where to find 3" stainless mufflers and resonators let me know, id liek to not ahv eto cut off my arm or leg to pay for this shit, off brarnd's are 100% ok in my book!......

fun to come!.... now to mig or tig it?........ its currently 99% mig'd and 1% tig'd......

ok here are some crapy pic's of what i have to work with.

a bit ultra snug where the, rear ward drive shaft, bevel box, steering rack, down pipe and the floor of the car all have to hang out and play nice.......

as u can see there isnt realy much in the way of the exhasut, but u ahve to understand this means that the exhaust it self is now the lowest part of the car, my cernter exhasut hanger got ripped off just trying to pull the car off my lift. my car dosnt sit all that low. its more a problem that a 3" piece of pipe isnt small and making it fit tight to hte car and not rattel isnt easy.

i think what my bigest paropbelm is right now is fitment. i built this system from 1 straight piece of pipe. i pie cut each bend and welded it up 1 piece at a time. i tack welded the whole system end to end then welded it up all at once, i think that the stainless shrunk back ever so much at each bend as to in the end making the system fit like shit. i plan to cut ia all abck apart. install the cat, muffler, resonator. 1 at a time. i will go about welding each joint compleatly then working backward toward the end of the car till its all done. this way i can fine tune each parts fitment for sure once and for all as i go. i paln to make a "race pipe" for the car also once im all done.
