lets post up random facts about tig welding that each of us know.

first off, dressing your tungston makes a huge difffrence in how your weld will trun out. do it properly and save your self a headake, make sure to get the grane runing top to bottem on  your tungston, not side to side or at an angle. belt sander highly recemnened to do this (i don thav eone but will soon!)

second, properly clean, prep your work. iv found tig is uber picky that what your welding is cleaner than a witches nippel befor u try to weld it.

ok .. no everyone keep the ball rolling, i wnat to here about proper ways to back gass, and other rad tricks i have yet to get into!...

I use a grinding wheel (for tungsten only) and put the tungsten in a hand drill to spin it while the grinder is running. Best point I've gotten besides on a sharpener. I sharpen all mine at work that way and then bring them home to play. If it's for you get yourself a dedicated wheel for it and change it out when you're welding. Also sharpen a bunch beforehand so you have plenty if you need to swap during a project.

Holy shit clean too, buy acetone by the 5 gallon pail.

I've not done anyhing using backpurging as I haven't done stainless pipe yet and that's the only real reason I would.

The only thing that I can think of to help would be to use a piece of copper on your metal work table reverse the polarity of the welder, and tap the foot pedal enough to get a bit of an arc to round out your tungsten when you plan to weld aluminum.

This might be obvious to all of you......?

my miller 200dx (think thats its modle name) hot starts on alumanum no problem. but iv heard thats a good trick to have up your sleve in general!

when i use my grinder it leaves s slight sprial patteringo nthe tunston i notice the ark comes off all wavy and a pain to contorl for a bit till the tunsten gets good and hot and the grain from grinding it go's away. i used a belt sander to dress my tonston the toher day an dwow it was a lot nicer.

bal hbal.... come on eeryone get in on the fun!....... i bet someone has a few swanky tricks about dipping there balls in liquid steel!

FOOT PEDALS.....  BLAAA!!!  set the heat right and its not needed.     the biggest thing i can tell you is be patient and keep a good rythem,  as in how fast you move to how much you dip your rod.  the smoother you are with those two the better your welds will look.  oh and a tip on aluminum tig...  just bacause the weld looks good (a row of quarters) dosent mean its strong.  most of the time to get really pretty aluminum welds it actually welded too cold and dosent penetrate through.  penetration is critical in alum due to its soft nature.  and alum weld will brake in a heartbeat if you dont have good penetration.  i dont have the prettiest alum welds in the world but you cant brake them in a vice with a hammer.  trust me my boss put it to the test.  iv been tigging for 7 years so ask me whatever you want and ill try and give you a good anwser.

on the subject of alum. Work surface prep can also make or break you... clean the ever loving fucking out of any surface you are even close to welding or you will pay for it.
