k

The CEO of Nike paid us to build a slew benches and beds etc for the new Ducks "training center." Really just a high tech locker room.

My preference is bikes and hotrods but since leaving white collar industry to fabricate full time it is certainly jobs of this type that have paid the bills for the most part...

Steel frames, there were two types of the same general shape and matching "benches" as well. I didn't have anything to do with the bench creation nor do I have any pictures for that reason..

various pieces of 304SS were tacked to the frame (by me mainly) with tri-mix and stainless wire

after the frames were shelled in 304 all the seems were TIG welded (by me, stace, some redneck) and then had to be ground down to match the in house graining patterns on the panels

most of the wood shop had been laid off and got called back in to grind out the TIG work

one type with the top sections back from the apolsterist and mocked up

second

Stace ran down to the site (Eugene) for some other shit (she made the benches and is still dealing with them) and got some pics post install, apparently they are already getting good use

now that you're bored out of your fucking mind.....

Nice job Seth.  They look pretty burley if you as me!  I REEEALLLY want to learn to TIG, and I DEFINATELY would like to stainless wire. I hope I get lucky enough to get into a similar job when I move.

Stainless MIG is pretty mellow... just get a bottle of tri mix and a spool of stainless wire if you are really curious.... the splatter is hard fucking core and you have to be sure to cover any surfaces that you dont want slag balls on.... I used chunks of masonite in this case.

TIG is actually easy as fuck, you just need an oppertunity to do it and learn the basics. I learned on stainless so when I came to start on mild it was fucking hilariously easy. Basically the pool control you get with mild is reduced by about half in stainless.

I actually tried TIG aluminum first when I was in school for it.  Halfway through the term I got seriously pissed off, and figured I would be better off learning TIG on mild first.  I do know that it was VERY similar to oxy-acet welding and I was FANTASTIC at that. So if I can just get the foot pedal control down then I have no doubt I can do it. Maybe if I get lucky enough I can get into a shop that has those old TIG welders with the remote hand control, Id master that shit in no time.

Anyway, its so cool to see what some of you guys are doing.  Like Duff's post and your post.  Just to know what else is out there.  Id really like to learn machine shop stuff, and TIG welding. Just for the heck of it.

Alumininum TIG is a mother if I tried that first I would have quit trying. Get some super thin mild sheet or pipe and just run some fusion welds to get your pedal control down. Adding wire after that makes learning easier.

The key to learning foot switch control is to have your machine set low enough that when you floor it it's not wayyyyy too much power. If the machine is set up correctly the rest is a breeze.

Aluminum TIG is indeed a mother.... Aluminum MIG (using a spoolmate and a miller 210) is just as bad... you basically have to learn how to play hot potatoe with your pool, if that makes any sense...

I am going to start posting shit in the fabrication area again, maybe it will get other people to.

It was 3/16 edge to 3/16 edge for what I would call the "shell" over the bases/skeletons. You had to run a damn near perfect bead at 1/8 without burning the outer edge.

I don't dislike people unless I am put in a postion to have to deal with them... like... people stoping you on the street to ask you jackassy questions etc.. guess it's best put that if you leave me alone I will reciprocate the favor.

Can someone move this to the fabrication area?

yes and no... but  yes. in that case (the photo) he is smoothing over the bumps in graining created my spot welds put inside the frame to keep the pieces from pulling away whilst being welded....all that material was grained in house so seeing the graining get fucked up here and there was a biiiiigggg fuck up.

Thanks for the TIG tip.  Aluminum MIG isn't hard so much as it is just butt fucking ugly.  Even when you get your welds absolutely perfect they look fucked up and dirty. Aluminum MIG was easy as pie once I threw down a couple of welds.

Oh and Im building a truss for Nellis Airforce Base but that doesn't mean I have to like the Airforce.
