that isn't a road bike, it's a mixte. there are a lot of shitty 70-80 style road bikes... if you are shopping it is best to know what you are looking at. don't buy that one. even the true racing bikes from that era lack some modern technology making them much less user friendly- aero brake levers, indexed shifting, dual pivot brakes, freehub body cassete mechanisms... buy something solid with downtube shifters from the early 90's. look for shimano 105 or better, and the aluminum bikes from that era are super overbuilt and rigid so i like the lugged steel ones much more.

i'm not a big fan of cannondale. i used to sell them and had to ride them all the time after assembly, they made my wrists hurt and i always felt cramped.  how tall are you? that one bike is a 23... thats fucking big.

you probably ride about a 58cm road bike, so shop within a cm of that... maybe up to a 60 but i doubt it unless you got some long ass legs. there are too many variables to recommend a brand... but i'd avoid older french bikes as they have their own bottom bracket, steerer tube, and crank extractor threads so finding replacement stuff is a motherfucker.

Listen to Tony, he knows his stuff and has given good advice so far. ;)

The first listing is pretty decent.  I bet that bike ran about $800-900 new on the dealer floor.  It's not "boutique" but it's solid and the Sora stuff works decent.  The second listing is a neat bike, but not nearly as new or modern component wise.  It's also a bit smaller, and might not work for a 6' guy.

Regarding sizing, when looking at a bikes listed sizing realize that not every brand does it the same way.  Some are measured C2C (center to center) or C2T (center to top).  C2C measures from the center of the bottom bracket shell to the center of where the top tube intersects the seat tube.  C2T goes furter up and measures all the way to the top of the seat tube.  The same bike can measure 57cm C2C and 59 or 60 C2T.

That the 2nd bike you were looking at is 57 C2T which really works out to about a 55 or 56cm C2C.  For a 6' guy (which I am as well) that's too small.  I'm a bit rangy with long legs/arms so I'm on a 59cm C2C bike.

Another way to look at fit isn't by just going w/the length of the seat tube - you can adjust that by sliding the seat post up and down without really chaning the ride quality of the bike.  What's harder to change and really influences handling and fit more is the overall length of the top tube.  Most bikes are pretty square (so a bike with a 58cm C2C is going to have a top tube length measured from the center of the seatpost to the center of the head tube along the top tube the same length - 58cm) but Bianchi and a few other "euro" brands often times shorten up the top tube by 1- 1.5cm.  You can put a longer/shorter stem on a bike, but that really starts to effect the steering, not something you really want to go too extreme with when making changes.

So, looking back at that 2nd bike listed with a C2T of 57cm (actual C2C of 55/6), you're probably looking at a top tube length of only 53.5-54.5cm, which for a dude that's 6' is a bit short and could lead to a cramped feeling, especially when riding in the drops.

Hope some of this helps.  Sloping top tubes that are now in vogue don't really change the measurements, they just mean you measure along a "virtual" top tube that's parrallel to the ground.

cool a lil complicated but once looking at a picture of a bike i sorta understand. im not gonna go with an ebay bike just looking at ideas and whats out there. anothny here recommended i get a bike of craigslist so i could atleast see how i feel on the damn thing. i didn't realize choosing a bike is so critical. i should have my brother this stuff since he has been ridinging since he was 16 in france and has been in teh tour de FRANCE a few times with some teams back then. but he is always busy and he doesnt have time to talk much.

bikes are hard to recommend too, everyone likes shit set up different... i like smaller bikes. for instance, because i rode bmx for so long any mountain bike bigger than 17 feels too big.  i'm 6'3 and alot of leg, i should ride at least a 19, but it feels uncomfortable to me... i'm also picky about geometry... go to a shop and test some bikes, find out their dimensions and find and older bike with similar geometry.
