someone mention Suntour?
« on: June 04, 2007, 09:07:17 AM »

My pal Alan recently "reproduced" a hybrid (so called as it combined a fat tire frame with road bike components) he rode in the 70s - he won the first Repack downhill on this (pic is from 79 with pre production Cook fork).

8 months of ebay hunting and this is your parts pile - basically you need two or three of everything to get a decent component set.

Did I mention Alan also hand painted most all the early clunkers ridden in and around Marin in the late 70s?  Here's how the reproduction turned out.

TA crankset, KKT rat traps, Suntour Cyclone front derailleur.

Cyclone rear derailleur, Schwinn S2 steel rims.

Union 95mm rear drum.

Schwinn bolt on cantilevers with updated pads and Mafac hanger - state of the mountain art in 1977.

Suntour thumbies.

And although this should be a garage queen it gets ridden on the trails - I've taken it up Tam myself.

Just thought you guys might enjoy seeing what life was like before Shimano took over :D

I'm still rocking some Suntour XC Pro thumbshifters on my commuter bike.  Well at least a rear shifter.  It probably has around 8000 miles at 10 years of use on it and still looks/works like new.  The front shifter is in brand new never used condition in a box with a bunch of other weird/old mtb components (anyone remember campagnolo mountain bike brakes?)

That bike you're buddy built looks pretty sweet.
