I have a sickness...
« on: June 01, 2007, 05:04:43 PM »

...this just arrived thanks to the ebay, no good pics yet but soon - it looks better in person even the cables are perfect!

As near as I can tell 90% original (seat/post, tires, pedals, grips don't match) 1986 Mongoose All Terrain Pro - including Suntour MTB components from the peak of Suntour.  Roller cams, XC derraileurs, Pro adjustable levers, made for Suntour by Arai hardened and drilled rims.  I have a B-17 saddle with a period correct micro adjust saddle (and Breezer Hite Rite of course) and some decent Wellgo beartraps, tires will be gumwall Panaracer Timbuk II reproductions.

Perfect bike for a ride to the 7-11 to get some Rondo and Pop-Tarts whilst sporting Girbaud peg legs, K-Swiss' and a popped collared pink polo!

does a "vintage correct" bicycle warrant more money when selling it?

....maybe it's just me, but that just sounds retarded. it's a bike, not a hot rod...

haven't done true vintage correct myself but I like to ride em not show em - a Mongoose AT Pro was $500 new back in the day, I didn't pay half that for this one so I think I did OK but like I said I'm sick.

1985-86 was the peak for Suntour friction components - really the good stuff for us old farts who rode steel clunkers made into Tam bombers.  Mid 80s brought the first Shimano index groups, Suntour didn't have the R&D to catch up and the index stuff they rushed out was problematic and sealed their fate.

My Suntour XC Pro 7 speed "semi-index" shifter work great.  I usually use them on friction mode and they held up to years of abuse.

Neat bike, those roller cam brakes certainly indicative of the free thinking going on.  Kinda like a beefy version of the Campagnolo Delta brakes of similar vintages, except monsterfied.
