I've only seen this done one of two ways: either a quicker ratio rack (power steering or quaife) or cut and reweld the lever arm on the steering knuckle to shorten it.

Of the available options, I like the power rack, because I'm running a smaller diameter steering wheel (which ALSO quickens the effective steering, even though running one doesn't effect overall turns lock to lock-- it makes for shorter hand travel).

So what if the power steering pump costs (at most) a couple hp....

i think travis is more worried about an extra fluid in the rally car...

...but you could "line tune" the rack....just loop the two lines into each other and away ya go. or something along those lines

i personally have the quaife rack in my mk2, but i got a fuckin smokin deal on the thing years ago....it's just been sitting around. i dunno if they even make 'em anymore, do they?

tim knows quite a bit about this i believe, or should. there were a few eugene guys into autocrossing that had something in their car they bought somewhere that helped with steering. i remember one of the cars was a green mk1 jetta...coupe i believe....i want to say his name was Kip, but i'm not positive.

Phil runs a steering quickener in his Jetta AutoX car.  But it's definetly not a bolt in deal, lots of fabrication and welding that I'm not sure I'd trust on a Rally car unless you had access to a TIG machine and used Cro Mo or something.  I've also used PS racks without PS.  Also don't forget about the electric PS pump I was telling you about.  VW's Pump placement is horrible for dirt play.

Not too hard, it took me about two days to do my setup with beer breaks.

I used an AFCO 1.5:1 quickener, w/power steering. (I would consider the power steering a necessity, as he man status would be achieved at low speeds).

I bought two GM straight couplers.  I disassembled the column, removed the steering shaft, measured it about 20 times then sectioned it.

I then mock installed everything and built a 1/8" steel support and surround out of about ten pieces to allow the stock column to bolt to the quickener and still have the bearings straight at each end of the column.  This allows me to bolt it into any golf one using the factory mounts.  If I was smart I would have planned ahead and just used different mounts and a GM shaft, it would've been alot easier, but would have cost a fem more bucks, and I am a cheap ass.....sooo

I quadruple checked the straightness of everything, then welded the couplers to the factory steering shaft.  Everything is mild steel so I just mig welded it...shit worked fine, I don't think there is any need to tig it, unless you are after piece of mind, chances are if it is going to break at some time, the stress is going to be at low speed.

I have been using it VERY successfully for this season, and I can guarantee our stage times were improved by at least .10 second per stage mile.  I have not spun the car since that install, it is much easier to control the car, and is a shit load of fun.
