so, i rememebr reading back in teh day that a guy in CA was hand making hand guns for olimpic athlats that did that trathalon shit or what ever its called wher u have to run, bike, swim, shoot adn such. guns that were super light weight and ultra fast acton border line automatic. and the ultr afast fireing acton basicly made them illigal for use/sale/to be made in CA. this makes me wonder. hwo hard is it realy to make a desent fireing arm at home given u have some knolage of how guns work and the tools to dosomthng neat?... iv alwase watned a tommy gun. why not buld a updated verson? ahaha.....

Well, I designed my own weapon about 9 years ago:

It may look a little cheesy but I actually designed the firing mechanism, it ejects out the opposite side as per my preference and combines what I like best out of semi/automatic weapons and does it in a .308 caliber.  I just never made it.  I did start to price it out and sans the barrel and not counting the furniture which I'd make out of fiberglass it would have only cost me about $300 to make.

Well, keep in mind that I had a hook-up at the time for a place that had a pretty wicked CNC setup.  So, I'm sure it'd be far more expensive now.  But not terrible.  Although, I think it'd be illegal technically (though am not sure).
