It truely is sad to see a car club that I knew in the PNW back in '98 /'99 go to shit with people like you and all your east coast cloanies. Now i see why some of the "original" crew have left the scene. Looks like a bunch of DEMONIC WHOREDs who run nothing but there fucking mouth in the DCI now........... - Euro2.0

16v on carbs
« on: January 02, 2007, 06:43:55 PM »

So nuno and i were talking about carbs, and its seeming more and more what i would like to do. But there are so many things i dont know. I was reading on vortex in the carbs forum, and they said you'd need to run MSD 6A igniton box. How much and where to get? And also where to find carbs, and perhaps a carter pump, since no Fuel Regulator is needed. And is there a special manifold you'd need to fit carbs on a 16v? Im also guessing its not a smart idea to run only horns on the street. Any help is appreciated!  noob!

Mike (Red Baron) would have a good amount of info for you on this as he had a carb setup in his rabbit truck.

I purchased most of his stuff with the intent to put it into my Rabbit but I had to sell the Rabbit for school money and who knows when I will find another Rabbit.  Who knows, maybe I should sell it all.

Onto the info you need....

I will post all my links at the end.

Yes you need a special saucy manifold.  Pierce manifolds makes the best one around .  Available here... http://weberpartsdirect.com/  The manifolds are really nice and aren't pieces of shit.

Weber 45s seem to be the best size carbs to rock.  Most guys I have seen run these carbs due to the fact that with proper jetting they can be very well suited to either 1.8 or 2 liter 16vs. Plus they are abundantly available, easy and cheap to repair, and parts are available all over.

The MSD 6A works but the 6AL is the better choice.  I can't rememebr why.  I think it had something to do with the ability of advancing and retarding the ignition timing.  The difference between the 6A and 6AL is only one thing.

Carter 4070 is the way to go.  Just the right amount of fuel.  Summit has them For $70.  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CRT%2DP4070&N=700+4294925239+4294839053+400415+115&autoview=sku

If you are goign to run the webers, you need either an ABF waterneck or a nice machined waterneck from here.... http://www.twminduction.com/Home/sitemap_FR.html.  It's not on their site, but they make it.

Mike ran filters and horns for equal amounts of time on the street.  Neither gave him any problems.  But getting a rock in a horn wouldn't be good.

Here is the setup I have sitting in my garage....

I daily drove horns only on my ITB's for a couple years with no problems, but I wouldn't recommend it.  I think I was lucky.  For pumps CB performance has a good inline pump, I believe by Carter for about $45.  I'd also recommend Webers just for parts availability.  I'm running Dellorto's, and they work great but a couple parts I need are NLA anywhere.

You can run a bone stock ignition section from a CIS or CIS-e car if you want. All you'll need is a decent vac signal off the carbs.

For $800 if you're crafty and can read you can set up DIY ITB's and Megasquirt. Not as cool as carbs, and not as cool as 8mpg, but neat otherwise.

I really liked Holley pumps.  I ran one along with the Holley regulator on my Beetle with dual 44's for a while, no problems.

There's a dude on Vortex getting 171 WHP on a 9A block with Webers and 276 cams.
