1  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Re: Monster Cross on: October 10, 2008, 09:12:19 AM
although i'm still scared of carbon forks.

I guess it depends on what you compare them too.  The stock forks didn't so much "chatter" as "vibrate rapidly 2-6 inches fore and aft under braking".  Stiff MTB forks on a cross bike...yummers.

Oh and I'll take carbon over these forks too :D even though they are purty.

2  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Monster Cross on: September 30, 2008, 04:01:43 PM
Got the new fork on, fat tires fit and it rides AWESOME  brain damage!

"Stock" with 700 x 32 WTB Cross Wolfs - this is now the spare wheel set
(XT hubs, Salsa Delgado rims).

Love the stem...

Monster-ized with Winwood 26er MTB fork, black XT/WTB Trail 29er wheel
set, Avid CS2 rotors, IRD 12-28 cassette - all to fit the Bontrager XDX
29 x 1.75 tires.

Yeah a bit of toe overlap...oh well, more leaning less turning...

Meaty 'Tragers

All in all fun in the sun - gonna take it up Railroad this weekend - it
might even rain!

3  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Goodbye Breezer...hello Breezer on: September 29, 2008, 09:50:17 AM
Recently sold my Ignaz Cruiser - got a fat offer and was barely riding it cause, well...it was only good for coffee shop trips  you're #1!

Less than a day later this popped up on craigslist - low price, short on description with no pics.  I call and turns out know the seller and he's mainly a roadie that keeps his stuff clean.

1997 Breezer Twister with MAYBE two rides on it before I scored it...still had protective film on most of the parts.

The only non original part was the shock - they were spec'd with the Fox Alps-5 so I was real happy he replaced that expecially since he spent more on that RP3 than I paid for the whole bike.

I added a Hite Rite from my stash

Also managed to stuff 2.4 WTB Moto Raptors on, trimmed a few knobs in back otherwise fit nicely.

...1997 Breezer brass headbadge goodness...

It's a real fun bike, compared to the Titus Switchblade which is the go anywhere "F22" this is the lighter, tighter, nimbler "F16".  Mostly LX bits, XT rear derailleur, M600 brakes with Avid 1.9 levers.  Scanning the local clist for a decent donor bike to bring this up to XTR M952 spec and hopefully a good 80mm air fork like a 2001-2003 Marz X-Fly.

...it'll tide me over until I find the elusive 98 Lightning.
4  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Re: ...would you like some Salsa? on: September 29, 2008, 09:34:06 AM
head is 72, seat is 72.5 - feels fairly toit to me but still getting used to being so far forward on a bike.  The Winwood will bring the front up another 20mm...plus taller tires...so slightly slacker but that I can deal with by adding speed.

Yep BB7 "road" brakes, they are pretty much rock solid and there is plenty of lever travel left once the skinny tires lockup :-D
5  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / ...would you like some Salsa? on: September 25, 2008, 04:44:34 PM
Sold a few bikes (the Taylor SS and Breezer Ignaz), funds allowed for this to be my new office bike - perfect for laps around the marsh near my office.  Looks good out front of Noahs Bagels at lunch time too.

I tried to stuff some 'trager XDX 29 x 1.75 tires on ...juust fit in BACK but too tall in front.  That will be resolved when the Winwood Purist 26" carbon fork finally arrives, at which point the spare wheels (black XT hubs, black DT spokes, black WTB laserdisc trail 29er rims, IRD 12-28 casette, CS2 rotors) will meet those "monstercross" tires and I will try it on Tam.

Cranks are 130bcd...which kinda sucks ring wise so anyone have a compact crankset they can offer up?
6  Car & Tech Talk / A5 Rabbit/Jetta/GTI / Re: Hitch rack on the GTI on: June 24, 2008, 08:56:19 AM
Pretty much - Thule bought the rights to the sportsrack "non commercial" setup years ago - a scaled down version of those racks seen on transit busses.

perfect for heavy steel with no quick releases :D

come buy it now, please.  every time I take it for a test drive the urge to sell fades  brain damage!
9  Marketplace / For Sale/Trade / White 78 Rabbit w/Rocco 16V track day car SF Area $2K on: April 18, 2008, 09:54:02 AM
White 1978 Rabbit 2-Door Sunroof hatchback with Scirocco 1.8L 16V engine swap (BAR certified) and Rabbit GTI 5 speed transmission.

Rocco cloth seats, cracked 78 dash with tach, VDO gauge pod in stereo location.  Tokico Illumina-5s with ST springs and bars.  Custom strut braces F/R.  Rab GTI brakes - 9.4 vented disc in front drums in back.  No e brake.

CIS-E Jetronic harness was just refreshed so of COURSE runs great just in time to sell it.

Has 14x6 Golf GTI alloys with race rubber in front and crap yokos in back.  I will throw in four 13x5.5 Tarantulas with 205/60-13 RA-1s (my old Cabby track setup).

Has some rust here and there, mostly spare tire area as rear hatch seal is gone - wire wheel and POR would fix it, I was gonna cut it out and run a cell.

It's been a NASA HPDE car, great drive to the track and blaze special.

Titled and registered through 5/2009, will provide smog cert with sale - not due again until 2010 assuming you transfer within 90 days.

10  Car & Tech Talk / Motorcycles / Re: Picked up an RD350 on: March 06, 2008, 12:51:41 PM
There's a few RD's in town.  The other day I saw an RD400 Daytona Special.
I wish I had a Kawasaki H2.  750 triple.  Wowzers.

My pal Pete had a Suzuki GT750 - watercooled triple 2-stroke "waterbuffalo".  The bike oil burners are awesome.
11  Car & Tech Talk / Motorcycles / Re: Picked up an RD350 on: March 05, 2008, 10:07:37 AM
even I have Esher beat :D  that's rad, I had an RD400 for a while in 82 before I got my Honda 400-4 SS...0 to 60 in a blink of an eye...then hold on for dear life...kinda like a Cabby 16V come to think of it :D
12  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Re: uber vintage on: March 04, 2008, 09:36:16 AM
Awesome, I want a cycletruck.

My pal Erik is building a pre-war Cycle truck, insane front hubs on those!  Cycle Truck Keg Stands!
13  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / Re: uber vintage on: March 03, 2008, 11:44:28 AM
I also have this bike Alan built up as a museum quality replica of the bike he bombed in the 70s.

Alan on Repack around 1977.

The replica.

Union "un-obtaininum" rear drum - 95mm AKA the howitzer.  Used on 60s era Schwinnn Town and County tandems.  If you find one on ebay and it sells for under $500 it needs parts you couldn't get anymore in the 80s.  This was NOS and it works like a friggin swiss timepiece.

Schwinn bolt on cantilevers for forged blade forks (these are 40s era parts!), Alan used Dia Compe bits and better pads to outbrake the drums (or no front brake) used by other racers...the idea caught on fast.

I've ridden it a few times, scared to really open it up - it's worth $6K easy I don't wanna chip it!

Oh...I also have this bike...which is the EXACT SAME BIKE Alan rode in 1977, just updated and repainted over the years - last bits added were WTB Cantis.

And speaking of Union drums...this blue 1936 frame has the front model.  It will endo you.

14  Car & Tech Talk / Bicycles / uber vintage on: March 02, 2008, 01:26:41 PM
So my pal Alan moved to AZ, I am storing 6 of his bikes until the summer.  For my trouble he says I can keep this one...

Original paint 1939 Schwinn 'motorbike" - rare pre-war cantilever frame style.  Most of the parts are NOS 40s, 50s and 70s.  Front drum is a 40s era Schwinn Fore Brake, rear hub is 2-speed Bendix coaster.  Rims are 40s Lodbells.  Bars are late 30s Torrington Longhorns.

It's like a 50 pound clunker...but man what a smile on my face when I roll it around the hood!

15  Random Bullshittery / Health, Fitness & Food / Re: weight loss on: March 02, 2008, 01:17:48 PM
Keep it up all!

I am wearing size 32 jeans ... haven't been this skinny since high school.  163 pounds this AM after my bike ride.

I'm gonna maintain this weight as much as I possibly can.
