I got my 1080p 50" Samsung Plasma there two years ago for $600 under Best Buy's sale price.

Plasma vs. LCD. 

Go Plasma.  We have one of each, same brand, almost the same specs, both fed by identical components and wiring.  The plasma wins for image quality hands down. The LCD wins if you like a ton of motion blur.  The only cons to the plasma is it runs hotter (and I'd guess uses more energy per hour of use) and if you father inlaw decides to watch MSNBC for 2 months straight, it will get some image retention.  I haven't noticed any loss of brightness in two years of semi-heavy use.
