Title: 16V fans
Post by: Oldskool84 on October 15, 2006, 10:25:09 AM
From what I'm seeing, there are no relays in this system.  Is this correct?  I'm running the 2 speed fans with the 3 pin thermoswitch.  When the car was running last, I hooked it up just using the high-speed setting and the lower of the 2 pins on the switch (#2--95C).  I threw a relay in between the load of the switch and the fan as I wasn't sure of the set-up.

I want to hook it up now factory style using both speeds.  I'm not seeing a relay though like on the single speed cars.  The only thing I see is the after-run relay.

Is it wise to leave it with no relay(s), or should I add 2 in the mix?  Thanks.

That's what I'm talking about.  I looked at the VR bentley and didn't see anything about a fan relay or control box.  Am I missing something?

It would be really easy to rig that up via relays.  But also if the factory isn't using relays in earlier cars you could probably safely run them full power thru the fan control switch.  I've been thinking of doing this as well, as I need to redo the wiring on the Cabby's fan.

Too busy now tho, school's finally catching up with me in week 4.

That's what I'm saying.  I looked at a VR and a Passat 16V Bentley and I don't see a fan control unit.  Maybe I'm missing it.  The Rabbits def. have one.

I'm just going to run a change-over relay for both speeds and be done with it.

Eh that won't work.  I'll have to do two relays.  Word.

I wired the last one I did directly.  It worked perfectly for the three years my brother had the car.  I just ran a hot wire to the power side of the switch, a wire from the low temp switch spade to the low speed spade on the fan, a wire from the high temp switch spade to the high speed fan spade, and a ground to the ground spade on the fan.  As long as you have a three prong switch and a three prong fan, four wires and your done.

W/O relays is simple.

Hot wire, fused 30A to terminal #3 on the switch.
Terminal #1 goes to #3 on the fan.
Terminal #2 goes to #2 on the fan.
#1 on the fan goes to ground.

Adding relays would be like this.  The + 12 you could grab from the power supplying the fan power.

#1 on the stock switch is the 105 deg.C.    #2 is the 95 deg. C.

#2 on the fan is low speed.  #3 is high speed.

Somebody double-check me.
