Who can school me on what I need camera and skill wise?
« on: October 02, 2008, 12:37:50 PM »

The few pics I've seen from you guys make me embarassed to post my own shots from a point and shoot.

Could someone point me in the right direction to get started on taking better pictures?  Gear, skills, etc?

Alright mandingo.  I'll take a stab.

First off...  What do you REALLY want to do?  Aside from just "taking better pictures".  I mean, you can take a great photo with a shit camera if you can compose it right.   What type of shooting do you want to do?  What do you most like taking pictures of?

Do you just want to take better photos when your out and about with friends and shit, or do you want to be able to compose photos and go out to simply take photo's? Two completely different things.

Like said before, what type of shots do you like to take..?

It would help us if you posted some of your shots...

Don't feel embarrassed about posting pictures, we're all here to learn from one another...

I guess, much like my driving, it's easier to blame the hardware then the operator.

All of my pics seem flat, if that makes sense.  There's no depth to them, no color.

Here's one taken this weekend.  This is probably the weirdest example ever:

The colors seem vibrant.  You can tell the three fine ladies aren't flattened up across the street.

Here's one of mine.  See how everything is just kind of there?  There's no depth at all.  Colors look washed out.

I guess what I'm after is a primer so I know enough to figure out what it is I'm after.  Otherwise, all I can ask are the insanely detailed questions like the first post.   thumbsup

the example with your models shows depth due to it having been taken with a shallow depth of field, which is all in the lens, not the camera.

meaning the aperture was wide open. weird how a shallow depth of field will yeild more depth, but it does.

how much terminology do you know/understand?

i'd probably start off with some basic photography books. you can read the ones that were written based around film cameras and still apply a lot of it to a digital...you just gotta read where they talk about film types and just call that your white balance settings. :) that and you dont have rolls of film. just a CF card. :)

but there are some pretty nice point and shoots that will allow for some depth of field adjustments, if i'm not mistaken, and will produce vibrant colors.

that shot was taken with a 1100 dollar lens it better have some pop.  seriously though, the DOF duff speaks of is the key to that photo.  solid, sharp subject everything else blurred.  that was achieved using a telephoto lens with a wide open aperture in this case since it was getting.  running the aperture as wide as it will go lets more light in, but also gives you a much smaller focus.  it works in this case, but in other pics you need to close the aperture up to have more in focus.

that being said, i have taken a lot of good pics with a point and shoot.  the leading pic of moses' PVW feature was shot with my 3 megapixel olympus P+S.

taken with said point and shoot.....
