Converting from FI to Carb?
« on: October 01, 2008, 11:00:01 AM »

car: 1.6L FI 78' Rabbit

I recently procured a 2L ABA bottom/JH top motor for very cheap which is currently setup with the passenger side pointing intake and FI.

I have a single draft carb (Holley 5200) jetted for a 2L on an 8v intake.  I think it'd be more fun to have the carb on then run FI and would love to run a clean engine bay.

Anything I should know about this swap?  The linkage I'm not worried about, I can do that jazz.  I think I'd need a different gas tank/fuel pump.  Ideas?

u can keep the same fuel pump if u put on a super good FPR or so im told. and i belive u can use the stock ignition system all on its own w/ a carb......  should be a super kake swap, are u worried about going back to OEM EFI? if not ....... u can clean up a shit ton of stuff super easy.........

Just swap a regular rabbit intake manifold onto it and everything else will plug in.

the carter fuel pump is only like 75 bucks.  On Rando's, we installed that pump, and capped off the return line.  Ignition is stock CIS coil, distributor, and ICM.  Super easy conversion.

Nevermind, I found an electric bosch fuel pump that I bought originally for my RoadRunner that I never used except for siphoning gas ;)

Check it's pressure rating and if needs a reg.  Here's what I run/ran, will run again, on the Race car.

Seriously, sounds like more work to do the swap if you're wanting a cheap driver.  But it's your car :)  Once you figure out CIS I love it's simplicity.

carbs don't like high psi pumps and stock cis pumps put out like 95psi or something crazy like that.  I would suggest getting a really good fpr or splurging the $70 for the carter fuel pump.  i believe its the 4070.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Carter/180/P4070/10002/-1

theres a place to get them cheaper but its only like $8 cheaper.  worth it if you don't want to destroy your o rings in that carb.

You're supposed to be able to run the Carter pump minus a FPR but I'm running one. 3psi

Esh, which FPR are you running?  I've seen a couple Holley FPRs that adjust down that far, thanx for posting what psi you were runnin.  3psi seems like a good spot for carbs.
