Ghetto wheel repair
« on: October 09, 2006, 07:51:48 AM »

I've repaired a set of wheels this way before, but not for gouges this large.  It will probably take me all week to fill/fix all four with dry time on the filler.  Since I'm home all day today and its cold as shit outside... here are some pics.

1 the wheel
2 the worst gouge
3 get that shit clean
4 the smaller rash filled and nearly dry

the larger rash ended up requiring a bit of a mold to hold the JB in place.  Easy enough with some tape.

mold it up and pour it in...  Hurry up and wait.  After 6 hours you can sit it under a warming lamp to speed dry time.  Since I'm sanding the JB down as filler, I'm waiting the full 24hrs before any sanding.

Yeah, this is the hardest hit wheel but it looks like it was just shaved off.    Besides, Kelly will probably gouge them up right after they go on.

The balancer thingymabob is not functioning right now...  I should bring my multimeter in and check it out.

I have a random orbital and after I knock this down I'll see if it balances out

At any rate, the others are just rashes, no hits like this one.

The golf is a running member currently, thats why there are no brakes for ya.  Well, that and I need some VR axles to complete the lug swap.  So this week is 'hurry up and get the fucking wheels done' week so I can put tires on them.  The tires on there now are NO LONGER rated for snow use.

The rash filling is actually going well, but the temp in the garage isn't very conducive for priming/painting right now.

1  the tape 'mold' removed

2  pretty fucking cool, aside from that buble that was hiding in the JB    nothing a little putty can't fix

3  and that little rash filled up

Bringing the wheel inside on top of the roaring heater vent sure helped it cure quickly.  This wheel is now ready for some more sanding,  a light skim coat of filler for the bubble and another light spoke scratch or two.  Then it gets some primer and more sanding right before the paint...  which I have not decided on yet.

yeah, but the last time I sprayed wheels in the house it didn't go over so well.  It even creeps in when I spray in the garage if the wind is just right.

My girlfriend used to get pissed when I painted parts in the basement.  Good thing I don't have a girlfriend any more.
