I get the impression that DCI is a front for a handful of elitests with moderately nice cars who surround themselves with people who cant think for themselves, who need to be part of something to feel better about themselves. Its a viscious cycle. -big bentley on vortex

Timing check?
« on: March 10, 2008, 03:29:20 PM »

Is it possible to use an inductive timing light at cranking RPMs or what? I tried it on my latest 8v swap and it doesn't look like the mark is anywhere near where it's supposed to be, even though I re-aligned everything after finding the distributor 180 degrees out. Dunno if the vac advance or anything will prevent me from getting a reading at that point.

CIS?

You plugging it to the #1 plug?

Dizzy set to 6 degree?

Leave your timing light at Zero.  Run your car at 900rpms and adjust the dizzy while running til  its at +6 degrees

give that a go.

Someone else can chime in.

Cheers.

The reason I ask about doing it at cranking speed is because I can't get the thing to fire in the first place. I have fuel (wet plug) and I have spark. I don't think I'm getting them in the same place at the same time, though.

You can crank it and while you do that rotate the dizzy back and forth to get it started/timed.
-if incase that is the only problem.

After its running you can set timing.

It has points correct?

Is it gapped properly?

Ha! I sat watching, waiting for the smiley icon to finally give me the finger. I didn't even know there was an inoffensive version of that little guy.

Car's running now with a GX motor in it. Boring, low compression, but with the bigger 8v intake and a *cough* neuspeed throttle body on it. Between that and the fairly fresh rings (compared to the 200k mile motor I just pulled out) and the new clutch, it feels like a whole new car. Idles rough as hell, though. Timing's dead-on now and I thought I found all the vacuum leaks. I'll check the plugs in about 50 miles and see if it's leaning out or anything. I'm certain I've got something fucked up with the vacuum system, just don't know where yet.

That and my relay shaft is missing the upper and lower bushings again, so I have to punch my stereo and my e-brake handle to get from third to fourth.

if it's CIS and you haven't checked the spray/leak of the injectors yet or tried a fresh fuel filter, i'd go there after looking for vac leaks. pretty rare to come across a set of injectors that don't spray all gross.

Turns out we had the leads that go to the wide-open throttle switch plugged into the thermal sensor on the coolant flange and vice-versa. Consequently, it was running rich and richer. Now that everything's plugged in where it's supposed to be, (and I'm pretty damn certain I have no vacuum leaks) it runs very well and starts even in the horrible wet cold with only a brief turn of the key.

Unfortunately, my oil light has come on twice while driving up hills. In both cases it almost immediately went out. I don't know why, but it was missing a quart. I have checked for leaks and it certainly has a drip, but it's very light (1/2 inch circle on a pizza box overnight) and I think it might be because we only put four quarts into a dry engine and it's sucked a bunch up into the oil galleys and such.

It'll be a month or more before I fully trust it. The car feels like new, now, and since it now has a Quaife it handles better than ever.

We'll see what happens.

Check your oil sensor.

They are know to fail, leak or both.

I replaced the one on top of the oil filter flange, but not the one on the side of the block, yet. Can't remember why there's two of the damn things anyway.

Got a temp sensor in the oil filter flange, a pressure sensor in the hole behind that (same piece) and then another pressure sensor on the side of the block? Is that right?
