who's the TDI expert?
« on: February 13, 2008, 10:15:25 PM »

so i need to learn some tdi stuff. anyone know a bit?

1. what tdi's are out there? i know they were available in b4 passats and mk3 jettas. any difference between a mk3 tdi and a mk4 tdi? what about mk5 tdi? there is rumor some new tdi motors will be coming soon in golf/jettas, toureg and tiguans. will these be different than the ones that were available in mk5 jettas last year?

2. is there a list of engine codes that tell what motor came with what car?

any info would be greatfully appreciated! thumbsup

the new diesels are going to be blue-tec engines optimized for low-sulphur diesel, and are NOT the same as the ones they had up to 2006.

these will be near zero emissions, and also produce more power.

a B4 passat or A3 engine would be easier to swap into an older car as far as electronics and actual mounting points.

I know better than to tell you a Mk4 or Mk5 one wouldnt work, because any asshole can make anything fit in any car if they really want to, it'd just be more difficult.

good luck finding any of them cheap.. I know a few people that looked for months for a swap engine and had no luck.

for work here is what we are thinking. we found a place that sells vw turbo diesels and we are thinking of purchasing one. the problem is that they don't have emissions equipment on them. they are for industrial use. so we wanted to see if any of the industrial motors are similar to vw/audi motors. then we would buy a wrecked car with a similar motor to get the complete motor with emissions equipment, put it in our test mule and do real world testing to verify that it would work for our application. this way we wouldn't have to develop a lot of custom emissions equipment and keep our initial investment at a minimum. also, after looking at the industrial motors i have a feeling that they are just turbo diesels and not tdi's. is there a good way to tell the difference between a td and at tdi? the initial search with the engine codes from the industrial motors doesn't match any of the vw or audi codes on that website nuno posted.

we also would like to know exactly how tdi's work and the differences between the different versions. i'm finding a lot of useful info on tdiclub.com as well.

on a personal note, i want to know because i plan on getting a tdi to put in my mk2. i'd like to know how to tweek them for more power and look at alternative fuels like veggie oil or biodiesel.

i'll have more questions as i learn more about them. we are talking with audi right now and hopefully will get some help from them.

I know a bit about em...

you are gonna want to get an A3 or B4  parts car to do a swap for the wiring factor alone.

TDIs are all drive by wire, so dont even think about splicing in the engine harness to your swap car.

alot of people say waste veggie conversions arent good for the long term with TDI's, however I know quite a few people who have been running veggie tdi's for 35k or more with no problems.

with a ecu and injector upgrade you can be as fast or faster than a stock vr instantly.

i'm hoping to find an a3 or b4. they are getting hard to come by though. i figure i'd get the swap done and dialed in before even considering veggie oil. but i would like to try it to see what can be done.

With just an ECU upgrade they're quicker than a stock VR...  Not top end though...  They don't seem to do high speed particularly well - Assume this is down to gearing.

A 130bhp 1.9 TDI goes to 185bhp and 285lbft with just an ECU map and a panel filter.

With a hybrid turbo, ECU upgrade and Injectors, they're fucking mental.

Like 400+ lbft and 250bhp etc

Run it on decent diesel (Over here Shell has an Optimax equivalent diesel with high cetaine rating) and it gets even better.

Whoever maps the ECU has to be shit-hot though, or else EGT's go through the roof and you get a shit-load of smoke.

Big Intercoolers help a lot...  I didn't change mine, but in the summer you could really feel it struggling.  95 Centigrade Air Intlet Temperatures were common in the summer when the little stock IC got heatsoak.

you must have a PD or newer TDI.

the ALH and 1z motors (A3/B4 cars) arent that nuts.

we also have shit for diesel fuel here. ULSD everywhere and 51 cetane is the highest i've ever seen at any pumps here.

Yes, it was a PD.  Are they available in the US?

We can get our oily mitts on 55 cetane diesel over here if we can afford it.
