vr6 gods out there?
« on: January 14, 2007, 09:39:16 PM »

i am looking to port match my vr head........

here is the exhasut side. the black rings shows how much meterial of the head is needing to be removed to gasket match the exhasut runners to the freshly gasket matched exhasut manifolds.

and here is my intake side of my head w/ the gasket over layed. nto nearly as much to take off on this side.

now iv have done lots of head work on v8's and on 8v's......... yep i thped that right. both are a tad leanyant on what u can do and cant do. iv beard on a vr you have to be a lot more carefull what u do so not to upset the ballance of the goofy runners and shit ........ so. wht is a girl todo and not to doo?.

i basicly plan to just simply open up area's not matching the gasket and taper it back. is this ok or will i be tampering w/ teh head too much and cuase baby jesus to die?

thaks1!!

Other then that you have a good plan. Leave a ~1mm step up to the manifold. Open the intake to gasket and blend down as far as you can on the long runners, that's CRITICAL. There are a lot of gains in the bowl but it's easy to really eff things up. Keep the mods there minimal. Valve throat should be 85%-90% of valve head diam, no more. Be sure to blend the area right behind the valve seat into this area well.

Best money is spendt on a $$$ valve job. 3 angle is stock, 5 angle is recommended.

ok, so should i just simply clean up the exhasut side of the head and call it good. not gasket match the exhasut side.

and on the intkae ill gasket mtch that blend it nice and clean and clean up the bowls.

i did get a 5 agnle valve job when the head got decked and the new valve guides installed. i had the machean shop actuly mod the head and the guide slightly. the cut the guide a tad short on the end that drops into the the runner and also lower the stoping point on the head that the guide rests aginst. all this was to hope that i dont cruzy my valve seals w/ my cam's.

i plan to hang out in my shopt tongiht andmaybe tommrow night finising up my head mod's so i can put it back together and install the fucking thing. its been in my living room long enough.

thanks for the heads up!

Yeah just clean it up, you can open up the port a bit just make sure you leave a good step up into the manifold.

ok, so i took your advice and i have a new queswton. where the runner's make there nice trun down into the bowl area seems to ahve a hell of a lump/choke point. should i open that up and make it into a much more mellow trun? i have a real ylong ass alumanum bit that can totly reach down into all the long runners nice and easy ontop of being able to get at this area from the bowl it's self. i was afraid to mess w/ it much till i asked as id like to not fuck up my head.

thanks!

i hope to have this installed this weekend when i get free time again!...... then ill pull the motor so i can do some work i nthe motor bay.

That neck and turn is the hardest part to port correctly and still shape well. Its why the long runners flow shitty, but it's easy to mess up. All depends on how competent and accurate a porter you are. I can't remember how big the neck is but I would only make it 10-20% bigger then the valve head at the very most.

What spring compressor are you using? I just ordered a bigass C clamp like one with an aluminum C and a fluted end. Great for taking the valves out with the head off, I can install springs in about 30mins on a 12v.
