dyno'd again today...
« on: January 14, 2007, 12:46:25 AM »

snagged a 169.6 @ the wheels as the best...

i went in lookin for 170 at the wheels, pretty much got it.

now i'm catchin slack on the 'tex that it's low numbers.

anybody?

you all should know what i have done now....but if not....

TT 268's
GIAC 268 chip file
hacked 2.9 wanna-be
K&N cone
no cat
2.5 side exit exhaust
L/W flywheel (steel)
3.94 R&P
diff

that's everything that revs and spins.

pull done in 4th.

What kind of dyno?

The only thing that is different that I see is the side exit, it might be too short a pipe for max power. I remember Bernd doing a lot of exhaust tuning on his old 3.1 Rabbit and having an almost full exhaust made more power then a shorty. We all ran TT 2.5" with either Borla or Flowmaster mufflers. Also, how big is your test pipe, does it neck down to 'stock' where it goes into the cat back exhaust?

Only other thing I can think of is the TT 268s aren't as aggressive as the Schricks.

You're also missing a MK4 gasket, IMHO that's a given on any cammed car. It helps torque more then you think it would.

I would have guessed 175whp from that setup but the difference is within the err of the dyno and correction factor.

Shoot me the run file, I'll dick with that and you'll have about 7 more hp and feel better .

well, i didn't get the run file, they just printed me off the results on paper.

it was a dynojet 2wd dyno...i'm sure it's a few years old, as i've known about the place for a few years.

as for the "test pipe"...i made the exhaust. i took a flange from a cat, welded it to a peice of pipe that goes straight into a headman headers glasspack, goes to the end of the tunnel, turns left 90*, then 180's straight into the "summit racing muffler" (white box version of a flowmaster chambered style muffler), then out the side of the car. all the bends are mandrel, but i couldn't guarantee that they all connect seamlessly, as i did the shit in my driveway w/ a sawzall and my lincoln wannabe welder and a big magnet to put the pipes together for me...

it's not that i feel bad...as i went into hoping for 170 @ the wheels...i dont really pay attention to what other people are running for power on the vortex, i merely had somebody make a comment that said "wow, for those mods, that's low"...

i saw a website where a guy was puttin up dyno's for VR's (www.vr6dyno.com)...there was one on there that was similar setup to mine, and made almost 180....but it's with DSR or Schrick cams i believe...

either way, i'm happy with the car. it's fast enough for me, and sounds fucking sick.

i'm just savin up for julians head and block setup, i'll rehone the block, re-ring it, throw it back together w/ the head, put my cams in it, w/ a few extra exhaust goodies and rock that till i can swing a charger for it all. :)

It'll be plenty fast without the charger and it's better to go fast without one then relatively slow with one.

i figured it'd go fast w/o it...and faster w/ it.

i could whip a pulley out at work in a night to up the boost a tad that i'm sure is gonna disappear w/ bigger ports, bigger intake, and bigger bores...not that i'd be much, but it'd be worth a smaller pulley. :)

That's the problem with SC's no horsepower knob. Always having to machine something.

I'd be upset too, blower car with all that other flow stuff should easily hit 250whp.

That is pretty much where Im at right now, the only other non oem parts on my car is the exhaust which is a 2.25 eurosport a few years old, so I wouldnt worry about not making power Jess.

I haven't been on here in forever and a year but just to add some diversity to the mix..

My set up is as follows:
Home made intake (thanks Kyle) with K&N (sort of cold air but not quite)
TT 268 cams
GIAC chip
MKIV headgasket
42Draft Designs testpipe
Magnaflow cat back
Competition Clutch Stg.2

Stock everything else.

Now, before I get bashed for this....my dyno pulls were made in 3rd gear, not 4th but when I dynoed it last year before the trans rebuild and cams etc. I made 4 pulls, one in 4th, the other 3 in 3rd and there was ZERO difference in hp.  I'm going to be dynoing again soon in all 4th gear just to shut up the asshats on vortex who gave me shit about it.

194whp
189wtq.
Also went 14.85 @ 98mph with a 2.70 60' time at MIR 2 weeks after it was finished but was misfiring bad through 1st and 2nd.  I think it needs a coilpack or at the least new plugs and wires but the trap speed indicates low low 14's and with a better 60' at least a 13.99

discuss.  I've got video and dyno sheet if anyone needs proof.  Ask Nicky P how quick it is.
If 42 ever gets off their bums and make the MKIII intake I'll add that and a 2.9clone to hopefully crack 200.
thanks to Kyle Dent for doing all the trans/cams work too :)

you're car is just strong though.. before all that you dynoed 10hp more than i did with cams.... asshole.

when we did the dyno pulls for the test pipe numbers in my car the guy pulled in 3rd. then we asked him to pull in 4th it was about 2 hp difference... nothing to sweat over but vortex kids are little faggots about that shit.  fuck them.

Good power but only ok traps, hopefully it was that misfire. Or that dyno reads WAY high. For 3rd/4th I always dyno in 4th just habit doing some turbo cars. On a FWD car that's never 'direct drive' it doesn't make shit for difference. Plugging in a 1.8T open element intake temp sensor is worth a few HP on the dyno .. almost a consistent 5whp, but keep that to yourselves. Haha.

What's the car weight? Should be an easy 13.99 pass if you're 2700lbs or less at that power level.
