SDS signal magnet drift?
« on: December 24, 2006, 12:25:52 PM »

Has anyone heard of this ever happen before?  Been daily driving, or at least a couple times a week without touching the trigger in at least 2 years.  All of a sudden it runs like crap and won't stay running.  Plug wires look like crap, so I order Magnacore's.  Nothing, now it cranks like the timing belt is off a couple teeth, but it's not.

So I spin the motor over by hand and watch the "magnet seen" screen, doesn't pickup the sync magnet.  So I realign the trigger and it picks it up good now.  But the batteries dead so I can't run it.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  I don't see how it's possible for the magnets to "drift"

I don't understand how they drift.  Mine, at least, are drilled in and epoxied.  Was the hall sensor all scummed up?  Your pulley may be bent as well.

Nope epoxied as well.  Hall sender has normal road goo on it.  I think I got it figured out.  As the pickup bracket is mounted on top of my PS tensioner bracket, I found the PS bracket was cracked.  So I can only assume that it broke and caused a shift thru the brackets.  Got them realigned and it's running now, kinda, not perfectly.

Damn.  I mounted mine the same way.  I guess I'll look for an alternate.

Well keep in mind that this setup and one similar have been used for 3? years of daily driving, and a couple of few times a week driving.  So IMO that's not too big of a deal.

Haven't messed with it in a few days.  I was working a lot last week, so I just borrowed my dad's truck and now I'm in Houston.  I'm hoping the interference I'm picking up is just the sensor not aligned all the way.

Fucked with it for an hour or so just doing alignments.  No matter what I do I get an ERR signal and interference that you can feel when driving it.  So I'm thinking I've got a bad connection on the hall or possibly a bad hall.  SDS tech support has been great, so we'll see what Barry has to say to try next.

SDS seems to think it's an electrical interference issue now.  So now I need to try relocating some sensor wires and see what happens.  But it does run smoother with the new wires :)

So to continue on the problem.  It's been intermittently getting some interference in the RPM signal  causing the RPM display to read ERR, and a small tach jump.  Figured I had a badly crimped end on one of my plug wires.  So I tear the upper intake off and throw my old POS "build 'em yourself" wires on and it still misses.  Pull it back apart thinking maybe alternator interference as my volt. reg is going out.  So the Magnecors go back on, I start it up and all is fucking well.  It idles perfect, runs perfect.  And other than being heatsoaked from idling out front ran just fine down the street.
WTF

I'm just hoping that issue is solved so I can dig into the leaking injector next.

I guess there's a reason they suggest Magnecor.

Ya, but it's been missing since Jan. with the Magnecors....  Took 'em off, put 'em back on and no miss.  Fucking Volkswagen.
