Title: MTB rear disc mount adaptors
Post by: Scuba on April 21, 2008, 01:54:20 PM
I'm actively riding intermediate trails twice a week. I got a hookup on a front fork/disc brakes/ and 2 disc wheels.
I was just going to run the front wheel/set/disc, because I'm not dissatisfied with the conventional rear braking and the rear does not have brake mounts.

Just my luck, my old rear hub took a shit yesterday. The lbs said the bearings were obsolete. Since I already have a new rear wheel and disc setup, I went and purchased this(http://gallery.mtbr.com/data/mtbr/500/TiHag_Amoeba_Disc_adapter.jpg) a2z adaptor.

I dont know if it will work with my dropouts, but if it does, I was then going to weld it to the dropout to make it a permanent mount.

Does anybody have any experience with these?

I do not want to purchase a new frame, it is a chromoly ?97? stumpjumper fs and I'm into it for next to nothing and is bulletproof.

i used one for a while on an old aluminum frame that i couldn't let go of.  while slightly cheap and overwhelmingly jangy feeling, the a2z mount worked just fine.  i cranked the fuck out of the bolts on it and bent the plates to each other.  not sure if i was supposed to or not, but i did.  i figured more anti slip insurance. took a little fiddling around to get set up but again, functioned just fine when all was said and done.  a little more involved when fixing flats/removing wheel but, its just a skewer so no biggy.

i'm retardedly anal with my bikes and the mere sight of the thing eventually drove me crazy and i had to send the frame to spicer cycles to have the man weld on a disc brake tab and a couple guides, among a few other things for a remarkably cheap price.  yes i like him and plug him whenever possible.  he even threw in a small support bar leading to the new disc mount as i've heard frames can crack and bend and whatnot from the stresses a disc brake can put on it, if it was not originally equipped with one.  i've never seen it happen but, that doesn't really mean shit.

I'll probably get the a2z next week and see if it fits. My bike is at the lbs getting the new fork put on and cut down. I'm not anal about my bikes, so if it works, then great. If not, I've got to decide between getting a new hub and keeping rim brakes or finding a local guy to weld on a tab. I'm trying to keep everything on the cheap, because I can get easily carried away with new hobbies and blowing money on them.

I've heard about white clay. I may be down saturday or sunday. Depends on what I can do with this rear hub situation.

The adapter works well, I have two sessions on it and I tighten the bolts every time I leave the house. I'll probably rock it like this till I find a steal on a frame.
